ECO Tree Planting Project

Sikh Union (Coventry) Eco Project commenced in 2019

Further to an initiative earlier this year by Eco-Sikh, an environmental organization based in
Washington USA, to engage the Global Sikh community to plant 1 million trees throughout the planet
to mark the 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, Sikh Union
(Coventry) will plan to plant 550 trees in the Coventry area in honor of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th
Birth Anniversary.
We are planning with Coventry Council Parks Team to plant a variety of native trees and shrubs at
various sites as and when appropriate.
The primary site will be at Longford Park, Foleshill Coventry, where 300 trees were planted by Sikh
Staff working at Marconi Communications as part of their contribution to the Millennium Forest in
1999. This is known as the Marconi Khalsa Wood.
Together with help from The Friends of Longford Park, the Council Parks Rangers, and Sikh Union
Volunteers, we have continued to maintain and develop the site by planting shrubs and native bulbs
(daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops) in November 2018.
With guidance from the Council experts, we hope to plant trees at other sites in the City – schools,
parks, and recreation areas so as to enhance the Environment and involve the local diverse community
members, especially the younger generation to become aware and engage with the project.
We seek assistance from volunteers, suggestions (types of trees/plants, locations), and donations from
the local community.
We hope to start the project by planting on 14th March 2019 which marks Sikh Environment Day, and
will continue to plant the remaining trees and plants as appropriate
